We are pleased to announce that four awards have been granted
under the 2009 Charlotte Hoyt Bagnall Scholarship. As in previous
years, this year's recipients are talented young musicians with a
deep appreciation for the role of music in worship. The following
is a brief introduction to the recipients:
Scholarship Recipient:
Aaron Tan -
Aaron, a Canadian, is a devoted student of church music who has
been serving churches as organist since the age of 16. While
earning his Bachelor's degree in Engineering at the University of
Toronto, he served as the Orgainst and Choir Director at the Church
of the Ascension. He is currently the organist of the First
Presbyterian Church of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Aaron is a doctoral
candidate in the University of Michigan College Of Engineering
working in the area of Material Science. This coming year he will
study organ with Dr. David Palmer. Aaron is a bright and talented
young man who is fully devoted to both his engineering studies and
his church music.
Special Award Recipients:
Rose Whitmore -
Rose is a doctoral candidate of music at the University of
Washington . Prior to moving to Seattle last fall, she served at
the organist at the First Church of Christ Scientist in Tigard,
Oregon . She received a Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from
Northwestern University and a Masters degree in Harpsicord
Performancee from the University of Oregon.
Laura Ouimette
- Laura is a graduate of Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of
Arts degree in Music. She is currently the Director of Music for
the North Haven UCC church. Starting in September 2009, she will
attend the University of Washington where she will study for a
Masters Degree in Organ Performance.
Evan Cogswell -
Evan was last year's scholarship winner. He graduated from Seton
Home Study High School in May. During the year he completed the two
year Performer's Certificate Program for high school students at
Hartt School of Music Community Division. He plans to attend the
Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford where he will
study organ performance and composition. He is the assistant
organist at St. Augustine's Church in Glastonbury.
